a. Aerobic and Anaerobic Conditions
- Students will have the opportunity to observe aerobic and anaerobic respiration in the human body. In Part A, students relate increases in pulse rate, body temperature, and respiratory rate during exercise to the increased need for energy and the cycling of oxygen and carbon dioxide through the body. In Part B, students relate the presence of muscle fatigue to lactic acid produced through anaerobic respiration.
b. Fermentation in Action
- In this activity, students will set up a model to observe and predict fermentation in yeast. Fermentation is a form of anaerobic respiration, meaning that it produces energy without oxygen. The fermentation converts sugar into an alcohol or acid and produces carbon dioxide and a small amount of energy (ATP) in the process. The fermentation process in yeast and humans is similar, but in humans, the process produces lactic acid, and in yeast it produces ethanol.
