Lab 4a

• In this lab students will heat magnesium sulfate hydrate (Epsom salts) until the water has been removed. They can then calculate the percent water in the hydrate and use that to calculate the formula of the hydrated crystal and compare it to theoretical data.

Lab 4b

• In this lab students will read about different macromolecules, then go through a condensation polymerization by taping amino acids together into a protein in order to “synthesize” insulin. This lab is a great way to show how chemistry is relevant in the biological sciences.
